Projects

Energy dissipation – Fratelli Carli plants (Italy)

Activity

Preliminary, definitive, executive and constructive design

Description

The building, consisting of two independent buildings, has a resistant structure with a mixed reinforced concrete frame. and zip code with regular plants (47.00m x 43.00m – 32.00m x 76.00m) and spread over several levels. The building does not have any anti-seismic details and from a dynamic point of view it can be considered as an inverse pendulum structure. For the adjustment intervention it was decided to use the innovative technique of additional energy dissipation through the use of dissipative bracing. Specifically, two types of dissipative bracing have been used: BRADs, i.e. devices with displacement-dependent (hysteretic) behavior, and OTPs, i.e. devices with speed-dependent (viscous) behavior. In this way it was possible to pursue the so-called strategy of increasing the dissipative capacity of the structural system, allowing the seismically adequate structure to absorb a greater quantity of energy than the existing one. The mechanical non-linearity of the devices used required the development of appropriate non-linear dynamic analyzes
