New Bridge over the Montone River (Italy)

Activity

Evaluation of the existing structure, final and executive design of the new superstructure.

Description

Following an evaluation of the existing bridge over the Montone River in the Municipality of Russi (RA), the final and executive design for seismic retrofitting was prepared.

Retaining the foundations, piers, and abutments of the existing bridge, which were found to be suitable for the intervention, the project included the creation of a new deck of greater width, built with a mixed steel-concrete system and seismically isolated at the base, with HDRB elastomeric type bearings.

The new bridge consists of a continuous girder over three spans, 20m+25m+20m respectively, made of CorTen type steel supporting a 9.5m wide reinforced concrete collaborating slab, completed with a 1.5m wide cantilevered side cantilever cyclobe. The use of S355J2+K2+W+N steel was planned for all metalwork, and the connections are welded and bolted. The activities carried out included both global, static and seismic, and local analyses according to Eurocodes and national standards.

The activities were completed with the preparation of the erection project, including both the deconstruction phases of the existing deck and the launching of the new deck
